community gardens

community garden

(English at the end)

I saw an exhibition in Barcelona on CCCB, post-it city, there was a part in it about gardens in New York that the people convert to their own way voluntarily, creating a community work.

Now that I’m in New York, I could see these gardens, called community gardens. In East VIllage, the area where I live, it’s plenty of all kind of community gardens. These are unconstructed areas of the city where the neighbors of the neighborhood wanted to convert it on a community space, for leisure time. Some of them belong to a specific building and only can access the neighbors of it. There are others that are public and can access anyone, even they organize activities.

An example of community garden accessible for anyone is Sixth Street and Avenue B Community Garden.  There are small urban vegetable gardens in a public space. In this garden they also have a small stage where they play performances and live music. There are places to relax as well, where you can stay in a sunny sunday reading the newspaper and drinking a cup of coffee, for example.

The other gardens that are private, that ones that belong to the neighbors’ community of a building, they also use it as a meeting place. In my case, the garden of my building is totally neglected, it’s called “Brisas del Caribe”, it’s a shame, but there are also spaces that were begun for some enthusiasts neighbors and it has finished in the hands of neighbors without any interest on it.
These gardens, with or without vegetable gardens, public or private, are maintained by volunteers who want  the garden to grow and to conserve this small green space in the city. Taken in conjunction all these green spaces in the city we earn a small lung for it.

I love this initiative of community gardens. In Barcelona the people has their own vegetable gardens in the terrace of their homes, but it’s not too extended yet, and here in New York you can have it in a public space in the middle of the city.

On oasisnyc there is a map more updated of the community gardens.
